Historically India has primarily been an agrarian society. Even today when agriculture
forms a much smaller percentage of GDP, in terms of employment especially in rural India,
agriculture is the backbone of the society and the contribution of cows is center stage in
this respect.
Cow has been addressed as mother in Indian context because it provides for the basic needs
of its people. Its milk is used in many forms for consumption and excretory products are
used for farming as well as fuel. Observing its peaceful and benevolent nature has a mirror
effect on our personality and attitude and generates a positive mindset. This is not some mythological
story but a fact laden truth.

"Maharaj shri says that just like physically apes are our ancestors similarly in
terms of soul development cows are our immediate ancestors. Cows have been said to be the
limbs of sacrifice. They represent sacrifice itself. It is from the cows that the means
have flowed of the sustenance of all the worlds. They yield Soma (nectar) in the form of
milk. Cows are auspicious and sacred, grantor of every wish and givers of life. Of all
kinds of gifts, the gift of cows is applauded as the highest. Cows are the foremost of
all things. Themselves sacred, they are the best of cleansers and sanctifiers. People should
cherish cows for obtaining prosperity and even peace.Cows are said to represent the highest
energy both in this world and the world that is above.Cows constitute the great source of
blessing unto all. (Swastayana is a ceremony of propitiation, productive of blessing
and destructive of misery of every kind). Cows are the source of eternal growth."
If we observe other animals we will find that they are always in a state of fear and self
preservation. However strangely enough you won’t find this behavior in a cow.
In today’s materialistic world where every aspect of life boils down to a zero sum relationship,
cows have lost their position which they had occupied in the yesteryears of Indian cultural heritage.
If we want the situation to reverse then we will have to prove the benefit of cows in society from a
scientific viewpoint keeping an eye on the profit-loss relationship as an indication of current mindset.

"Cow is the only divine living being that has a surya ketu nadi (vein connected to sun) passing through
her backbone. Therefore the cow's milk, butter and ghee has golden hue. This is
because Surya ketu Vein, on interaction with solar rays produces gold salts in her blood.
These salts are present in the cow's milk and cow's other bodily fluids.”
Milk, Ghee, Curd, Urine and Dung together are known as ‘Panchgavya’ (Cowpathy)
in Ayurveda and have been found to cure many ailments of human beings and
animals. However, due to dominance of western culture on our minds, our precious
ancient treasure of knowledge has not received its due attention.

Cow’s milk is a complete food in itself and the antibodies found in its milk enhances
the immune system. Today when 70% of diseases have their basis in high cholesterol levels,
it has been proven that cow milk fat has HDL cholesterol which is beneficial and reduces the
bad cholesterol levels in the body.
Secondly the excretory products of cows like dung and urine act as naturally producing manure,
pesticides and insecticides which are required by all plants and crops. Chemicals that are used today
for crop cultivation are causing major health problems as well as diminish soil quality whereas a cow’s
excretory product not only improves crop productivity but acts as organic pesticides as well. Cow dung
is also used as fuel in the form of biogas as an alternative energy source to petroleum products. Another
major usage of cow urine has been found in treating diseases like of mental and physical disorders and
many more.

In Ayurveda it is said:
"Gavyam pavitram ca rasayanam ca pathyam ca hrdyam balam buddhi syata
Aayuh pradam rakt vikar hari tridosh hridrog vishapaham syata"
"Cow - urine destroys miseries and diseases. It purifies both body and mind.
Thus mental disease does not persist. It is in the mode of goodness (Satvik).
Cancer is due to virus in poison. These toxin generated viral diseases like cancer
are destroyed by regular intake of cow urine. Cow urine is fully successful in
destroying toxins. A lot of poisonous herbs mentioned in Ayurveda are purified
from their poison by cow urine. Cow urine keeps mind happy and calm, which makes
body healthy."

What is surprising is that even after so many uniquely positive characteristics; cows today
are in a pathetic state. The moment cows stop producing milk they are left at the mercy of
butchers. Our gurudev Devraha Baba had stated that if we want India to regain its prime
position in the world stage then we will have to preserve cows and realize their significance
in our existence. Laws alone cannot help protect the cows unless we as individuals make an
effort to make this change happen.
